There’s a long history of vigilante vote challenges in America, especially in the Deep South. In the 1960s, the GOP’s Southern Strategy included Operation Eagle Eye, which challenged Black and Hispanic voters right in the polling station.
Senator Hubert Humphrey, who served as the vice president from 1965 to 1969, said a better name for Operation Eagle Eye would be “Operation Evil Eye.” He explained, “One of it’s objectives is to frighten you, and others, by frivolously challenging your right to vote.”
But now, Operation Eagle Eye is back — on steroids — with the help of new laws allowing unlimited challenges and AI technology to create challenge lists.
“I fully expect 2024 to be the Wild, Wild West when it comes to election challenges,” says attorney Gerald Griggs of the Georgia NAACP. “Vigilantes are going to be out en masse. They want to make it easier to challenge and harder to vote.”
