Case Against Georgia Senator Nikema Williams Dismissed

Nicole Powers, Greg Palast and Zach D Roberts

Charges have been dropped against Georgia Senator Nikema Williams, who was arrested at her place of work — the Georgia State Capitol — while observing a Count Every Vote protest last November. “My charges might have been dropped,” says Williams, “but this is ...more

Steal Back Your Vote

Greg Palast

A lot of advice we’re getting from our progressive friends is to take photos of your ballot and silly stuff like that. Well, that’s all about how to complain after they steal it. I have a better idea: Win, don’t whine.

#1: Gang Vote

Arrive with five! Never go bowling, make love or vote alone. And volunteer at get-out-the-vote operations. It’s worth it just for the stale donuts, cold coffee and hot democracy.

#2: Tell Them to Take Their Provisional Ballot and …

If they try to hand you a “provisional ballot,” scream bloody murder. If there’s a problem with your ID or registration, demand adjudication from a poll monitor, come back with proper ID, or demand appeal to the county supervisor of elections. But don’t just walk away. If it’s provisional or nothing, take it — then return for the count to defend it.

#3: Get to Work

Volunteer to bring out the vote. Or watch a poll — to challenge the challengers. Get credentials; don’t freelance — you’ll likely get thrown out. Either get credentials from the parties or get information on how you can slay vote-eating dragons in your area from the National Campaign for Fair Elections the umbrella group including NAACP, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law and People for the American Way (NationalCampaignForFairElections.org).

They Don’t Call it The “White” House for Nothing

Bush at the NAACP Convention

God lost this time. I counted: Bush mentioned God only six times in his speech to the NAACP today. The winner was ‘faith’ — which got seven mentions, though if you count “The Creator” as God, well, then the Lord tied it.

Coming in right behind God and Faith, other big mentions in the First Home Boy’s rap included: The Voting Rights Act, his family’s “commitment to civil rights,” the “death tax,” rebuilding New Orleans and “public school choice” and “soft bigotry.”

As the philosopher Aretha Franklin once said, “Who’s zoomin’ who?”

Let’s take it one point at a time. …more

In the Land of the Free, the Legal Eagle is King

Greg Palast

There are 200 m guns in civilian hands in the United States. That works out at 200 per lawyer. Wade through the foaming websites of the anti-semites, weekend militiamen and Republicans, and it becomes clear that many among America's well-armed citizenry have performed the same calculation. Because if there is any hope of the ceasefire that they fear, it will come out of the barrel of a law suit. ...more
