Max Carver: This is an Attack on Democracy

During our special Save Your Vote broadcast on Tuesday, host Nomiki Konst (The Young Turks) spoke with actor and activist Max Carver (Desperate Housewives, The Leftovers) about his fears surrounding the 2024 election, and the vigilante voter challenges — as exposed in our film Vigilantes Inc. — that could hand Donald Trump the keys to the White House.

“This really is an attack on democracy,” says Carver. “When we’re talking about states like Georgia… the states that will ultimately determine the election because of the electoral college process, and an attack on voters to wipe hundreds of thousands of people from the voting rolls — it’s just unconscionable.”

As we show in our film, the self-appointed vigilantes that have so far challenged a staggering 851,000 voters aren’t just individual actors, but are part of highly organized, and often militarized groups.

“It’s strategic. These aren’t individual actors who aren’t being held accountable,” says Carter. “For this to be part of the rhetoric at play right now where this is acceptable, it’s terrifying.”

While Carver was glad to participate in our Save Your Vote broadcast to raise awareness for this new attack on voting rights, he’s also worried that time is running out. “What do we do about it? Is there a way to cure these ballots?”

Indeed, there is a way to “cure” challenged ballots, but it can be time consuming and expensive, since it often requires voters attend hearings in person at election board offices. Groups like the NAACP, Transformative Justice Coalition, and Black Voters Matter are on standby to help challenged voters “cure” their ballots. But this is painstaking work, and many voters affected won’t even realize their vote has been challenged and may not count.

“Is that gonna have an effect in the amount of time we have?,” worries Carver. “This is all hands on deck…We’re talking about something that’s gonna take place in the next week and I’m terrified that it’s gonna get violent. And this is just people…these are folks just trying to vote.”

We’ve just made our award-winning documentary, Vigilantes Inc., available on YouTube so as many people as possible can see it BEFORE Election Day. And though it’s FREE, we very much hope you’ll support our work by making a donation.

Help us warn America about the vigilante vote challenges. We are raising funds for free community showings of our documentary and an education campaign in battleground states — the prime targets of the vigilantes.

Watch it, then share it — help us warn America!
