Brian Kemp purged half a million voters in 2017 ahead of his race for the governor’s office against the Democratic Party’s candidate, Stacey Abrams. He said they left the state. (There must have been moving vans everywhere!) Our experts went through the list name by name and found at least 340,134 voters had never moved. You’re talking a third of a million voters who were canned — with no notice. They showed up en masse and they were either handed provisional ballots, which were thrown in the garbage — and about 50,000 people were simply denied a provisional ballot in violation of federal law.
What makes Abrams revolutionary is not just that she’s the first African-American woman nominated for governor by the Democratic party, but that she’s also one of the first to say I’m not conceding this race. Technically she hasn’t conceded. That way she can maintain legal standing to challenge these tricks. And we’re providing the evidence because we literally have the names and addresses of the people Kemp illegally removed from the voter rolls.
Because Abrams hasn’t conceded, under Georgia law, if you have a fatally tainted election it can be run again. But most important, and I think what she’s focussing on — and this will have national implications — is ending this type of targeted, racist, BS purging of the voter rolls; To say people have moved when they haven’t left their home, to say people have died when they’re still walking around, to say people are voting in two states when it’s hard enough to get them to vote in one — this game has to end.
As a candidate, Abrams has the legal status to challenge these things. And it’s not just Georgia. Georgia was the worst example, because it changed the outcome of the race, but you’re talking about something that is affecting Ohio, Kansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Michigan. It was huge in Michigan. Supposedly Donald Trump won Michigan by 10,704 votes, but they purged 60,000 voters of color on Kris Kobach’s say so. So it’s not just Georgia, but Abrams is saying I stand here, I’m not moving, I’m still technically in the race, and I’m going to sue your behind off.
