Kris Kobach's so-called "Election Integrity" Commission had their first public meeting in New Hampshire on Tuesday. One of the topics they discussed was claims made by a bogus Koch-funded Heritage Foundation report that 1,100 people in New Hampshire voted illegally (which Kobach repeated in his similarly bogus September 7 Breitbart column ). The "evidence" that they used to back this claim up was that some people used out of state DMV ID to vote. On yesterday's edition of the Thom Hartmann Program , Greg and Thom quickly debunk the Heritage Foundation and Kobach's assertion that illegal out of state voters changed the outcome of the 2016 New Hampshire Senate race.
Thom Hartmann: New Hampshire has got a bunch of good colleges... And to the best of my knowledge, if you go to college in New Hampshire...and you're there 9 months out of the year, you establish domicile. In other words, you can legally be part of New Hampshire and vote in New Hampshire, even though you're not legally a resident. That's the law in New Hampshire. You don't have to get a New Hampshire driver's license to vote. Why has that simple reality not sunk into these fools?
Greg Palast: Well, I hate to say it Thom, it's because they're not really fools. They're wise fools. They know exactly what they're doing, which is to create a hysteria that we need all kinds of rules...
It's worth noting that one of these suggested rules to combat the virtually nonexistent crime of voter fraud, put forth by panelist John Lott (the author of More Guns, Less Crime), was that voters be forced to undergo background checks similar to those that potential gun-owners are subjected to in some states. This, of course, is all really about creating yet more obstacles to prevent the poor, the elderly, students, and people of color — who all tend to lean blue — from exercising their right to vote.
Before turning to journalism as an investigative reporter for The Guardian and BBC Television, Greg Palast was an investigator of fraud and racketeering for governments and labor unions worldwide. His investigations have appeared in Rolling Stone, Harper's and New Statesman. Known as the reporter who exposed how Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush purged thousands of Black voters from Florida rolls to steal the 2000 election for George Bush. Palast has written four New York Times bestsellers, including Armed Madhouse, Billionaires & Ballot Bandits, and The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, now a non-fiction movie .
